Our entry-level model into the world of VOLTAiR headphone amplifiers.

The Phonitor se focuses on the essentials without compromising on quality.

It features the same audio signal amplification as its bigger brothers Phonitor x and Phonitor xe.

With the optional DA converter, it also plays directly from digital sources.

The Phonitor matrix offers two of the most common settings as switchable presets, enabling speaker-like listening via headphones.

Thanks to VOLTAiR technology in highest sound quality.

Everything under control

The volume is adjusted with a massive, milled aluminum rotary knob. The Alps RK27 “Big Blue” potentiometer conveys a pleasant “spoon in honey” turning feel.

In addition to an analog source, three more digital sources can be connected to the Phonitor se with the optional DAC768xs.

Headphone output with power

The Phonitor se offers a 6.35 mm jack for connecting headphones with a jack plug.

Up to 2 x 5 watts output power is available at this jack. This allows even very power-hungry headphones like magnetostats or electrostats to be driven effortlessly.

The revolution: Phonitor matrix

The Phonitor matrix is the revolution in headphone amplifiers.

Thanks to the Phonitor matrix, music can also be experienced over headphones as if it were played back over speakers. The tiring super-stereo effect thus belongs to the past.

Enjoy your music without listener fatigue and just as it should be heard.

Unlike the larger Phonitor models, where the “Angle” switch selects the opening angle of the stereo stage, this parameter is fixed at a standard value of 30° on the Phonitor se. The “Crossfeed” parameter can be set in two stages – “C1” and “C2” – with “C2” offering higher crosstalk/crossfeed than “C1”.

Music is normally produced and mixed for playback over stereo speakers.

Listening over headphones differs from listening over speakers. The biggest difference is the missing crosstalk of the sound signal from the left speaker to the right ear and from the right speaker to the left ear. This crosstalk is missing in conventional headphone listening because no sound passes from one side of the headphone to the other. This results in an unnaturally wide stereo stage and the various sound sources in the audio signal are not localized as intended by the sound engineer. This effect is often called the “super-stereo effect.” When listening normally over headphones, our brain can compensate for the incorrect representation of music playback to a certain extent – but this is very tiring.

The SPL Phonitor matrix can correct this false stereo image with an analog circuit. The Phonitor matrix thus not only ensures a correct representation of the stereo stage but also a relaxed listening pleasure.

The two main parameters of the Phonitor matrix are Crossfeed and Angle:

Crossfeed determines the crosstalk of the channels, the so-called interaural level difference.

Angle determines the opening angle of the stereo stage, the so-called interaural time difference.

In the center of attention

To perfect the listening experience, the level of sound sources arranged in the center of the stereo image must be reduced when the Phonitor matrix is activated. The result is that not only the position of all sound sources is correctly represented but also their volume.

In the Professional Fidelity devices, the value is fixed at a reduction of -1 dB, which is the best choice for an authentic representation of the sound stage.

Free choice

The analog input of the Phonitor se is equipped with gold-plated RCA jacks.

With the optional DAC768xs, three more digital sources are added: USB, COAX, and OPTICAL. (!)

PCM audio is received in S/P-DIF format both coaxially (RCA) and optically (Toslink F06).

Via USB, both PCM audio and DSD audio can be converted.

The DAC automatically takes over the sampling rate and resolution of the digital playback source. Whether a streamer, computer, or CD player is connected, no further settings are necessary on the Phonitor se.

The DAC768xs

As a converter chip in the optional digital/analog converter, the highly praised AKM AK4490 Velvet SoundTM premium DAC chip is used, which reproduces the finest sound details thanks to its architecture.

It converts PCM audio with a resolution of 32 bits and a sampling rate of up to 768 kHz, which corresponds to 16 times the CD resolution. Direct Stream Digital is also supported up to a resolution of DSD4 or DSD256.

Unlike the DAC768, which is installed, for example, in the Director Mk2 or available as an option for the Phonitor xe, the DAC768xs does not offer an AES/EBU digital input. The SPL DLP120 with VOLTAiR technology was also omitted in the DAC768xs. Nevertheless, it offers great performance that is unrivaled in this class.

Sounds good

In all devices of the Professional Fidelity series, we develop not only according to plan but also by ear from the very beginning. Many of the basic components are mounted through-hole (THT) on the circuit boards. This ensures that we can use the components that sound best.

The VOLTAiR technology

The 120V technology is our reference technology. It is unique worldwide in the audio sector because it operates with a DC voltage of 120 volts. This corresponds to four times the operating voltage of IC-based semiconductor operational amplifiers. We call this unparalleled technology in our Professional Fidelity series VOLTAiR technology.

The highest possible audio quality requires the highest possible audio operating voltage.

The 120V technology operates with +/- 60 V. To be able to process such a high voltage, we have developed special proprietary operational amplifiers that can operate with a DC voltage of +/- 60 V – the SPL 120V-SUPRA operational amplifiers. This high voltage would destroy conventional components and operational amplifiers.

The 120V technology achieves extraordinary technical specifications and sonic advantages. Technically, regarding dynamic range, signal-to-noise ratio, and overload resistance. Sonically, regarding detail richness and absolutely relaxed listening pleasure.

The “120V” in the name of the technology has nothing to do with the local mains voltage from the socket. It refers to the operating voltage inside the device with which the audio signals are processed.

The mains voltage from the socket is transformed in the device’s internal linear power supply with toroidal transformer to the required secondary voltage. Rectifiers convert this AC voltage into the DC voltages needed in the audio device.
