The DBX 286 S offers two signal inputs, optionally a microphone XLR jack or a jack input for line level, both with symmetrical wiring. Input signals can be amplified by up to 60dB, the level is displayed with four LEDs. A high-pass filter filters out interference frequencies below 80Hz. Thanks to the true 48V phantom power, high-quality studio microphones can also be operated. An insert jack allows external effect devices to be looped in from the dynamics.
For dynamic processing of the signal, a simple but very effective compressor is available for limiting and compressing. The gain reduction display is done with 8 LEDs. The de-esser is used to remove unwanted sibilants, two LEDs help with optical control. The enhancer represents a kind of intelligent tone control. With LF detail, the area around 80Hz is raised and at the same time the area around 250Hz is lowered. This gives rich bass without intrusive and muddy low mids. HF detail not only raises the high frequencies, but also produces additional overtones through phase and amplitude changes, which make the sound image shine more. With the noise gate, crosstalk and interference noises can be removed. Two LEDs inform whether the set threshold value is under or exceeded. With the gain control, the output control can be adjusted over a wide range to subsequent devices.
